  • Child abuse and Munchausen syndrome by proxy were investigated by a team of British researchers using covert video surveillance in 39 infants with recurrent apneic or cyanotic episodes suspected to have been caused by abuse (Southall et al., 1997): abuse was identified in 33 of 39 cases, 30 had been intentionally suffocated. Two major clues helped identify abuse: 1) bleeding from the nose or mouth [11 monitored children vs. no control cases], 2) findings that other siblings had died unexpectedly [12 of the 41 siblings of monitored children had died suddenly].
