Committee for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field, with an increasingly significant impact on education, presenting both opportunities and challenges. Notably, Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have garnered immense popularity, attracting 100 million users within just two months of their launch. Major technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Apple, are also integrating Generative AI into their products, signaling widespread availability. Illinois State University is no exception, with the potential for widespread adoption of these new tools among its student body, faculty, and staff. The university may leverage these new advances in AI to enhance its operational efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, Generative AI, exemplified by ChatGPT, can assume various roles in the teaching and learning processes, offering opportunities to improve the learning experience for students. Nonetheless, it is essential to acknowledge that while Generative AI holds promise, its unwise implementations can lead to significant ethical and legal dilemmas, potentially causing undue harm. Therefore, careful consideration of the ethical and legal aspects surrounding Generative AI adoption is imperative.
