Harold Gregor was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art at Illinois State University. He has a celebrated legacy as a painter, educator, and mentor. The long-time faculty member gained national acclaim for his Midwestern landscapes, particularly emphasizing the Illinois terrain in styles ranging from photorealistic to nearly abstract. Gregor found inspiration as he drove through or flew over Illinois farmlands. Illinois Landscape #56 is one that Gregor created for his Landscape series. He is also known for aerial landscape views in his Flatscape series. The artist was the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Academy of Fine Arts. Gregor’s work was displayed at the White House during President Barack Obama’s administration. His work is also on view at the Illinois State Library, Springfield; McCormick Place, Chicago; and Central Illinois Regional Airport, Bloomington, among many other locations. Gregor had a gallery in downtown Bloomington. He was born in Detroit in 1929 and passed away in 2018.
