Alumnus Honored with Article Award!

Posted on February 24, 2014 by Karen Coats

We are chuffed to note that Mike Cadden’s article, “All is Well: the Epilogue in Children’s Fantasy Fiction,” Narrative 20.3 (Oct 2012): 343-356, has been selected as runner up to the best article published in children’s literature during 2012 by the Children’s Literature Association.

Committee members praised the article for its “refreshing” structural analysis that “produces original and necessary insights by asking structural and reader-response questions” with “an invigorating array of examples, well-chosen and effectively explained.” One member wrote that it was simply “a model of excellent scholarship—smart, engaging, thought-provoking, clearly written” about a topic “I had not thought about as a kind of genre.”

Mike will received his award at the banquet at the Children’s Literature Association conference in Columbia, SC. Huzzah!

First Friday–December

Posted on November 27, 2012 by Karen Coats

First Friday will be held December 7th, starting at around 6:30, at Karen’s house. The book group for Handler’s book (see below) that was postponed will also meet at 4:30 that afternoon, same place. I’ll make a fire in the stove and have warm beverages!

(And yes, this is my alter ego–thanks for asking!)

Book Group: 11/9

It seemed to work out nicely to have book group the week after First Friday, so let’s do that again. We will be reading Why We Broke Up, a contemporary realistic fiction book by, um, Daniel Handler. Yes. That Daniel Handler. I didn’t get it either, but he’s obviously got an inner teenage girl in his head somewhere. So get a couple of tissues (you will need more than one), and read this book, and then meet at Karen’s on November 9 at 4:30. (And let me know if this date doesn’t work for people and we can always rearrange.)

First Friday

Posted on October 23, 2012 by Karen Coats

First Friday will be at Mary’s house this month: 606 S. Lee in Bloomington, on November 2, at 6:30. I don’t know who these people are, but they look friendly.

First Friday: October

Posted on September 20, 2012 by Karen Coats

First Friday will be held at the Roberta’s house–1330 East Grove in Bloomington on October 5th, starting at 6:30. Let us know if you need directions.

Bring your favorite autumn-themed food, or just bring your wonderful selves! Feel free to take the picture as your challenge! (Anyone know if Wyder’s has come out with their Autumn Cider yet–I’m looking forward to that!)

Reading Group for October

In October, we will be reading Tiger Lily, by Jodi Lynn Anderson. Take a look at Meghann’s review on the Reviews page–this book is a simply delicious revisit? revision? rethinking? of Peter Pan that focuses on the character of Tiger Lily as seen through the eyes of Tinkerbell. Yeah–you sooo want to read this!

We’ll meet at Karen’s house at 4:30 for book group on October 5th, and then we can head over to Roberta’s for First Friday festivities.
