Chem. 141 Lab will begin the first week of classes

You will need to purchase a lab manual (the new lab manual this semester has a green cover) and safety glasses from the Chemistry Club Bookstore online. Bookstore information is posted on the Chem. 141 lab schedule page on this website.
Please remember to wear proper lab attire (safety glasses, long pants, sleeved shirts and covered shoes) when you come to lab.  You must have a lab manual and proper lab attire including your own safety glasses to be in lab starting the third week of classes.

You are required to keep a lab notebook for this course.  A sample lab notebook is displayed on this website.  Your notebook must have your name, lab section, a Table of Contents page, Calculations page (this page will be left blank if the lab does not have calculations) and an outline of the Lab Procedures.  You will also need to start numbering pages in your lab notebook.

There are no make-up labs for Chem. 141.  You must show up for your regular lab section.   If you are sick and unable to attend lab you must first inform your Instructor before your lab start time.  You will also need to see a doctor and provide us with a doctor’s note.  If you know that you will be missing lab due to a school related field trip or an athletic event (if you are an ISU athlete) please notify your Instructor early.  You will need to provide the instructor the paper work two weeks before the event.

Please note that you will need to have a passing grade in lab in order to pass Chem. 141.  The deadline for Chem. 141 lab check-in is the third week of classes.

Before coming to lab, please check the following:

  • Purchase a lab manual and safety glasses online, pick-up from the Chemistry Club in Bohn-Nielsen Resource Room 215 JH and bring these to the laboratory.  The chemistry storeroom will no longer loan safety glasses to students.   After the first week of classes, you will not be allowed in the lab without your own safety glasses and the lab manual.
  • You will also need to bring a calculator to lab weekly.
  • Do not wear shorts, open-toe sandals, or close toe shoes with the back of your foot exposed in the laboratory. Shoes should cover the entire foot and not part of the foot.  Review safety information for more details.
  • Be familiar with the quiz procedures and schedules.
  • Review all other information on the links on this website.
  • Please make sure that your cell phones are turned off before entering the lab. Cell phone usage (including texting) will not be allowed in the lab.
  • Enjoy the lab!
  • View the General Chemistry Help Website if needed.

Your lab grades will be updated weekly on Reggienet. If you find any discrepancies please inform your TA ASAP. They will need to see the quiz or the lab report for which the grade has been entered incorrectly. Students with an excused absence will receive an average score for the lab that has been excused at the end of the semester.
