Laboratory Safety

All chemistry laboratory experiments have been designed to use relatively safe materials and procedures. Performing experiments in a chemical laboratory, however, represents a dedicated activity in an environment that is not entirely risk free. The modern chemical profession is exceedingly proactive in dealing with risk in the chemical workplace. Academic institutions are now governed by OSHA guidelines. According to these guidelines, the Illinois State University Department of Chemistry has adopted a Chemical Hygiene Plan. The safetyrules associated with this plan will be discussed during “check-in”. However, the safety rules must be discussed prior to this first laboratory period.

Federal and State regulations require eye protection in all laboratories.
Consequently, all students must purchase a pair of approved safety
glasses or goggles. You can purchase safety glasses through the Chemistry Club in Julian Hall 215 beginning the
first day of each semester.

  • Students who do not bring their lab manuals and safety glasses to the laboratory after the first week will not be allowed to work in the lab.
  • The Department of Chemistry Chemical Hygiene Plan prohibits wearing shorts above the knee and sandals in the laboratory. This regulation is necessary to protect legs and feet in case of chemical spillage or glass breakage.  Your clothing must cover upper arms and torso and upper legs and knees.  Please make sure that your shoes cover the entire foot and not part of the foot.  Students who wear sleeveless shirts or shorts above the knee and/or sandals will be denied access to the laboratory.
