Continuing his research interest in peripheral areas of American states (which included publishing in 2016 an article about Downstate Illinois), Dr. Sublett has looked at the terms upstate, downstate, and outstate across the United States. Sources include old newspapers for evidence of when and if these three terms became active in the 50 states as well as evidence via modern web-available information about businesses, agencies, and other entities incorporating them in names. His article, “Upstate, Downstate, and Outstate Across the United States,” is in the December 2019 issue of Names: A Journal of Onomastics.
