Science and Technology Week celebrates advancements in the field of science and technology, as well as the hardworking, dedicated students and professionals who make those advancements possible. Past keynote speakers include chef Charlie Trotter, television personality Bill Nye, theoretical physicist Brian Greene and more. The College of Applied Science & Technology, along with Illinois State University, was proud to host Tim Gunn on April 15, 2009.

Tim Gunn
Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style is not just any makeover show. As host, Tim Gunn leads fashion-challenged women on an emotional journey to unearth their personal style. From wardrobe essentials, tips on how to shop, to finding the right fit, Gunn uses advice from his book, Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality Taste and Style, to arm each woman with the basics to own her look and make it polished and stunning.
Gunn is Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne Inc., taking the post on March 5, 2007. Gunn joined Liz Claiborne Inc. in an effort to show the world that the company is serious about returning to their roots and focusing on product and design. As CCO, Gunn leads an ongoing campaign to restore a culture that welcomes the creative process, helps to shape a more competitive, consistent and compelling product and attracts and retains the best design and merchandising talent.
Formerly, Gunn served as Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons The New School for Design and was a vital part of the Parsons community for more than 23-years. Appointed to the position in August 2000, he was charged with retooling and invigorating the curriculum for the 21st century. Under Gunn’s direction, the department strengthened its position as the indisputable leader in fashion design education in America and as one of only a handful of leading programs in the world.
Prior to his appointment as chair of the fashion design program, Gunn spent most of his career at Parsons as Associate Dean of the school. In that capacity, he worked closely with the academic departments and helped develop programs and relationships abroad, including the international spectrum of Parsons affiliates in Paris, Korea, Japan, and the Dominican Republic.
Gunn has garnered critical acclaim for his role on Bravo’s Emmy-nominated Project Runway, where he has acted as mentor to the budding designers for the past three successful seasons. Gunn will appear in season four of Project Runway, premiering later this year. The Advocate magazine labeled Gunn “The sanest man in reality television” in a March 2006 article and Entertainment Weekly called him “a major arbiter of style” in June 2006.

Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature

Speaker: Douglas Farr
Douglas Farr is the founding principal and president of Farr Associates, an award-wining architecture and urban planning firm identified by the New York Times as “the most prominent of the city’s cadre of ecologically sensitive architects.” Farr Associates holds the unique distinction of being the first in the world to have designed three LEED Platinum buildings. Doug is on the board of the Congress of the New Urbanism, serves on the BioRegional Development Group board of directors, and was the founding chair of the LEED for Neighborhood Development project.

Speaker: Fran Mainella
Fran Mainella is a Visiting Scholar at Clemson University Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. Previously, Director Mainella completed nearly six years as the 16th Director and the first woman to lead the National Park Service. Fran served twelve years as Director of Florida’s State Parks, which were awarded the Gold Medal Award, recognizing Florida as the best state park system in the country. She has also served as executive director of the Florida Recreation and Park Association and as president of both the National Recreation and Park Association and the National Association of State Park Directors. Clemson University has presented Fran with its Walter T. Cox Award, and also named an award in her honor, encouraging women to pursue conservation careers. The American Recreation Coalition also presented her with the Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award.
In 2006, she was awarded the William Penn Mott, Jr. Award for Excellence by the NSPR. Most recently Fran was presented the 2007 Pugsley Award, the highest award given by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. Fran is currently a member of Newsweek Magazine’s Environmental Advisory Board, a board member of the National Society for Park Resources, a fellow of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, a member of the Advisory Board for the Children and Nature Network, and a national speaker on parks and recreation. Director Mainella holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut, a master’s degree, and an honorary doctorate from Central Connecticut State College.

Agriculture’s Role in a Green Economy

Speaker: Jon Scholl
Jon Scholl became the President of American Farmland Trust in July 2008, after serving as Counselor to the Administrator for Agricultural Policy at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) since 2004. At the U.S. EPA, Scholl led the development of the first National Agricultural Strategy, first agricultural advisory committee and the first agency-wide cross media agriculture team. He also helped direct agency regulations on animal feeding operations, renewable fuel standards, clean air rules, and emission reporting requirements. In 2007, Scholl provided counsel to the USDA farm bill team on conservation provisions. Prior to his work at the U.S. EPA, Scholl was Executive Assistant to the President of the Illinois Farm Bureau, among other positions including Director of Public Policy, Director of National Legislation, and Director of Natural Resources.
Over his 25 years with Illinois Farm Bureau, he worked with the Illinois Congressional delegation and coordinated several legislative initiatives at state and local levels. Scholl also worked at the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Jon and his family operate a corn and soybean farm in McLean County, Illinois. Interested in the development of renewable energy, they have sited windmills on their farm. Jon graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978 with a B.S. in Agricultural Science. Scholl was the recipient of the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Award of Merit in 2008. He is the former Chairman of the Illinois FFA Foundation Board of Trustees.
