St. Patrick’s day is a holiday celebrated on March 17. This holiday is inspired by Irish culture. On this day people who celebrate wear all green and gold and consider themselves to be lucky individuals.

Results of dataset

When searching the key words “St. Patricks Day”, Talkwalker produced 84.4 thousand results with a 787.1 thousand engagement rate. The main media outlets that the results came from were Twitter and other forums. This tells us that the majority of the users creating conversation about the holiday were news outlets and other individuals. The local news media outlets that engaged in conversation were spreading awareness about events happening on that day such as parades.

We see people starting the conversation on March 17. This is because St. Patricks Day is on March 17. What this data shows is that the holiday is celebrated and being talked about around the world.

Word cloud based on Sentiment

Overall, the results were positive. The sentiment rate was 62.9% positive and 6.9% negative. The graph also shows that all the posts were positive. Based on the world cloud, posts surrounding this holiday were mainly positive. Words that stuck out to me were “parade”, and “drink”. I decided to analyze the way different cities, and countries, celebrated the holiday. The countries analyzed were the United States and Ireland.

Chart of posts from each country (%)

Using Talkwalker, this chart highlights the percentage of posts from each country that I received in my dataset. 65.9% came from the United States, 8.3% came from the Untied Kingdom, and 4.2% came from Ireland. It was interesting to see other countries such as Brazil, Philippines, India, and Spain engaging in conversation as well. The specific cities I chose to analyze were Chicago, Boston, and Dublin.

Every year Chicago will dye the Chicago river green. This always laurs many spectators to watch the event. There are also plenty of bar crawls throughout the city. On the day itself, there is a celebratory parade that happens.

In Boston there is a huge parade that goes through the main streets to celebrate. This parade has many spectators all throughout the city and from other places to come together and celebrate.

In Dublin, Ireland there is also a large parade. I found this to be interesting because Ireland is where this holiday originated from, and the country is also located on the other side of the world.

After analyzing these different cities, I noticed that the celebrations are universal. The main topics that were in common was parades and beer. The tradition on St. Patricks day is to consume alcohol. In all the different areas, I noticed many people talking about different bar crawls happening, or complaining about intoxicated individuals.

After conducting the analysis of St. Patricks day, I have found that lots of people create conversation surrounding the holiday and what each city is doing to celebrate. The main cities discussed were Chicago, Boston, and Dublin. I found the similarities to be extremely similar and interesting to see how the holiday is celebrated in different areas across the globe. With that, I hope everyone had a safe and lucky St. Patricks Day!
