Notebook Rules

  • The notebook must be hardbound, spiral bound is not accepted. The individual pages can be quadruled, college ruled or blank. Notebooks can be purchased at any of the local book stores.
  • All data should be entered directly into the notebook, and in ink.
  • Entries should be identified with labels, such as: mass of KHP or initial buret reading.
  • Each notebook page should have a page number and should be dated.
  • Erroneous entries should not be erased, nor should they be obliterated. If an entry has been erroneously made, it should be crossed out with a single horizontal line; the corrected entry should then be entered as nearby as possible. Numbers should never be written over.

The First Page

The first page of the notebook should be reserved for a table of contents which should be kept up to date.

Left-hand page

  • Formulas used in calculations.
  • Calculations.

Right-hand page

  • The title of the experiment – for example: Acid-Base Titration.
  • Date, Unknown Number and Partner’s names (if applicable).
  • A flow chart or outline of the procedure.
  • The data collected, such as weighings, buret readings, etc.
  • Calculated results.​
